Duties: The recruited doctoral student will be working in research project The Multifaceted Life of Digital Health Records: Between Official Documentation, Personal Information and Cultural Objects as a part of a new graduate school in medical humanities at the Centre for Medical Humanities. The doctoral student is expected to conduct empirical research (incl. interviews and co-creation) in the nexus of different meanings assigned to digital health records (medical records, electronic health records) by different actors in different parts of the lifetime of the records as medical and cultural artefacts. The project is multidisciplinary and combines perspectives from medical informatics and archival and heritage studies. Supervisors of the project are professor Isto Huvila (Department of ALM) och associate professor Maria Hägglund (Department of Women's and Children's Health).

To be considered, proposed project needs to be completable by the applicant and to combine perspectives from medical informatics and archival and heritage studies in a doctoral thesis in the field of information studies.

Medical humanities: This position is one of five doctoral positions in Uppsala University's graduate school in medical humanities. Medical humanities is an interdisciplinary field at the intersection of medicine, pharmacy, humanities, art/literature and social sciences. It tackles issues such as the individual's experience of illness, the development of biomedical research and medical practices, and political perspectives on health care from different methodological and theoretical perspectives. Thus, the medical humanities create added value for biomedicine and healthcare by highlighting the social and cultural aspects of health and disease, and for the humanities and social sciences through a broader thematic approach to contemporary health-related societal challenges.

The graduate school aims to create an environment for interdisciplinary research linked to central societal challenges. Each doctoral student will work towards a degree in their own home discipline, but will also have an assistant supervisor from another discipline and incorporate perspectives from other fields in their work. The doctoral students will have an office space at the Center for Medical Humanities, and joint activities such as courses and workshops. This creates an interdisciplinary doctoral program, where doctoral students through supervisors from different disciplines, collegial exchange within the group, and courses receive support to develop their projects across disciplinary boundaries. Applicants for this position are therefore expected to be highly motivated to take part in the graduate school's activities and to acquire an interdisciplinary approach.

Education at the doctoral level: Education at the doctoral level consists of 4 years doctoral studentship (doktorandanställning). Doctoral students are expected to pursue their studies full-time and actively take part in the activities of the department. Departmental duties (typically teaching and administration) not exceeding 20% can be included in the positions. Applicants are required to have very good competence of both written and oral academic English. Requirements

Applicants must have a Master’s degree in Information Studies, Library and Information Science, Archival Science, Museum and Cultural Heritage Studies, Digital Humanities or a corresponding degree in a nearby field.

Rules governing PhD students are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala University's rules and guidelines.

Additional qualifications  

Applicants must have a Master’s degree in Information Studies, Library and Information Science, Archival Science, Museum and Cultural Heritage Studies, Digital Humanities or a corresponding degree in a nearby field.

• verified copy of the degree certificate for a relevant master’s degree (or equivalent) and a diploma supplement, and a transcript of records (if applicable)
• motivation letter and a research statement that discusses the state-of-the-art relevant for the project and how it can be pushed forward (see below)
• copies of written material (e.g., Master’s thesis) and other relevant documentation and written works the applicant chooses to present as a support for his/her application. 

Motivation letter and research statement: The motivation letter with a research statement shall not exceed 3,000 words excluding references. For this position placed in a project, the primary purpose of the research statement is to provide guidance in the selection process. It is vital that the statement reflects familiarity with the fields of medical humanities, medical informatics, archival studies, heritage studies and information studies, and is based on questions and perspectives of high relevance to those fields. The statement must be written in English.

Selection: The selection will be based on candidate’s ability to profit by the education and to successfully complete the doctoral education. Considerable emphasis will be placed on the submitted research statements.

Salary: According to local collective agreements (Lokalt kollektivavtal för doktorander och amanuenser).

About the employment
The employment is a temporary position according to the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5 § 7. Scope of employment 100 %. Starting date 1st of January or as agreed. Placement: Uppsala.
