HumInfra (2022-2025)

Research in the Humanities, Arts, and Social sciences is becoming increasingly interdisciplinary, quantitative, and multi-methodological with growing infrastructural needs for technology, digital/e-scientific resources, tools, and expertise for treatment. Currently, access to and information about nationally and internationally available resources are scattered, and appropriate training is often missing. HUMINFRA, a new distributed national infrastructure, combines specialised expertise from 12 consortium nodes in the domains of Digital Humanities on the one hand, with a focus on e-scientific/digital materials, tools, and critical interpretative perspectives, and on the other, of experimental and quantitative approaches, the use of sensor-based data, and real-time analyses. With work distributed over six modules HUMINFRA aims to 1) create a web based information platform collating and linking to existing information about digital/e-scientific resources and training opportunities in Sweden; 2) conduct a national survey of needs for which tools and training are not yet available; 3) develop new tools and national training opportunities for general access; 4) link and align the Swedish resources to international ones via Swedish membership in the Digital Research Infrastructure for the Arts and Humanities (DARIAH-EU). Input from all consortium nodes is vital to ensure comprehensive coverage. HUMINFRA thus creates a single entry point for researchers, contributing to national cost effectiveness in the use of knowledge and resources, and urgently minimising the risk of missed research opportunities. HUMINFRA will reinforce research in areas of specific interest to Sweden (cultural heritage, languages spoken in Sweden, national archives). In the long term, HUMINFRA will strengthen and promote Swedish Humanities, and ensure its national and international competitive edge.

SweDigArch

(CDHU on the capacity of co-financing the Department of Archaeology at Uppsala University)

SweDigArch will construct and run the Swedish National Infrastructure for Digital Archaeology, catalysing a new generation of data driven research on human-environment interactions. It will facilitate the production of aggregated and harmonised datasets previously unmatched in scope, fulfilling demands for cutting-edge integrative, interdisciplinary research on long-term socio- environmental dynamics. It will enable new approaches for digital methods, reinvent archaeological research agendas and ensure Swedish archaeology is part of the data science revolution. SweDigArch will be implemented through six modules: M1 will lead and coordinate the infrastructure; M2 will develop data aggregation functions and access through online interfaces and APIs according to FAIR principles; M3 will cover data from archaeological excavations and provide digitization pipelines; M4 will ensure the availability and integration of interdisciplinary analysis data from archaeological science; M5 will cater for cutting edge and future archaeological data, including photogrammetry, laser scanning, spectroscopy, imaging, molecular, synchrotron and neutron methods; M6 will ensure impact and societal value through communication, user support and outreach activities and stakeholder interaction. The main userbase will be researchers undertaking complex analyses of past environments and demographics, contributing to the understanding of long-term human-environmental dynamics and sustainable development. The secondary userbase will be archaeologists creating or seeking integrated datasets from excavations, prospection and landscape surveys and other sampling situations accommodating the full range of archaeological, palaeoecological and eventually heritage science data. SweDigArch aims to become a standard tool for users of all archaeological data, especially researchers, but also heritage managers, developers and planners.

InfraVis (2022-2028)

Essentially all academic research of today relies on analysis of data from a wide range of sources such as: experiments, sensors, modelling, simulation, or mining of data repositories. Several underpinning, and rapidly developing, technologies are supporting the analysis of this data. As we will show in this proposal, visualization serves as an interface to this ecosystem of tools and methods and integrates them into environments supporting scientific workflows, effectively sharing cognitive load between computers and humans. There is, however, a gap between the state-of-the-art in visual data analysis and current wide-spread academic practice. Support for the introduction of new, improved and tailored, visual data analysis environments thus have the potential to address challenges involving large and complex data, creating competitive advantages for Swedish researchers. To fill the gap and capitalize on this opportunity, the InfraVis initiative has been created with the mission to operate an infrastructure consisting of visualization experts, software solutions, and access to high-end visualization laboratories. Users of InfraVis will be offered assistance through a national helpdesk with rapid response times as well as in-depth projects addressing data and software challenges. InfraVis will also provide software solutions based on development within connected research groups, curation of international software and best practise, and user training in the form of courses, seminars and on-line documentation. To build an infrastructure with national coverage, we have pooled together nine visualization environments in Sweden interconnected in a nodal structure. The nodes will be hosted in proximity to research environments in visualization, which enables direct access to the research front as well as to state-of-art facilities. The governance structure of InfraVis is based on the leading researchers in visualization in Sweden as well as an international advisory board.
